The Story Behind “Who Is Like The Lord”

The song “Who Is Like The Lord” is a direct reflection of Psalm 113. After writing the chorus to this song, I was looking for something to write for the bridge of this song and I went searching through scripture for an idea to spark the final section. Once I came across Psalm 113:1-2, the bridge came together quickly and the rest of the song was re-worked to make it a paraphrase of that passage…

“Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord, you his servants.

praise the name of the Lord.

Let the name of the Lord be praised,

both now and forevermore.”

I love the fact that right in the middle of scripture is a hymnal that has had a place in Jewish and Christian tradition for thousands of years. People have been singing these songs, in various forms, for generations. It is such a cool thing to take one of those hymns and adapt it again, re-shaping it to have a voice in our current culture. Hopefully it will bring this old song back to life for a new generation in the church.
